Installation, testing, meetings, announcements regarding evaluation platform, situated in front of the building of Wood science and technology department (Biotechnical faculty of the University of Ljubljana)
Description and purpose of evaluation platform
Evaluation platform in the form of modular unit is situated in front of the building of Wood science and technology department (Biotechnical faculty of the University of Ljubljana). It is equipped with different tree species, selected in SA1 and basic versions of sensor units, installed in the form of facade elements, windows and wooden structure. Evaluation platform represents apparent realistic environment and serves for measurement of moisture and other relevant parameters, required for development of sensor unis (SA1), ICT system (SA4.2) and prototypes (SA5.2 and SA6.2).
Installation of wooden facade elements, February – March 2020
Unmineralised facade elements were prepared at Wood science and technology department (Biotechnical faculty of the University of Ljubljana). Elements, made from different wood species, were treated with:
- gray weathering effect with application of iron ions,
- wood impregnation and
- wax surface treatment.
Plan for exposure of evaluation platform facade elements, January 2020
Plans for selection and exposure of wooden specimens were prepared at Wood science and technology department (Biotechnical faculty of the University of Ljubljana). Selection was mainly guided with frequency of material usage for wooden facades and expressed interest of project partners for testing.
Regarding facade form, the following features were considered:
- horizontal layout of rhomb facade battens,
- rhomb with width of 63 mm and thickness of 20 mm,
- 10 mm spacing between battens,
- number of parallels is minimum 5 and is adjusted considering the location of exposure and
- thermally modified spruce wood is used at the most exposed locations near the top and bottom on all sides of facades.
Installation of window shelves in evaluation platform, December 2019
Spruce wood shelves were installed inside evaluation platform and aluminium shelves outside evaluation platform. Installation of outside shelves created waterproof membrane for bottom region of windows. Shelves and peripheral wooden batten represent protection for sealing tapes for RAL installation of windows.

Two single sashed windows Natura 3 890/1400 mm, one double sashed window Natura 3 1700/1400 mm, one double sashed window Natura Optimo XL 1700/1400 mm and entrance door Natura 3 1100/2050 mm were installed in evaluation platform. 5 different wood species, 7 different ways of surface treatment, 24 sensors for moisture measurement and 3 sensors for temperature measurement were used in total for wooden windows in evaluation platform. RAL installation was used with sealing tape on the external and internal side of windows.

Sensor equipment Scanntronik was placed in wooden windows M SORA, later installed in the openings of evaluation platform. 8 moisture measuring sensors were placed in double sashed windows and 4 moisture measuring sensors in single sashed windows. 3 sensors in total were used for temperature measuring, 1 per single compass direction. Length of sensor cables had to be adequate for wiring between locations of sensors and data loggers.
Installation of evaluation platform modular unit, October 2019
Modular unit with a size of 6000 mm x 2400 mm was delivered to the location with a truck. It was laid on footings. Exterior surfaces of modular unit were wrapped with protective foil to prevent the soaking of interior. Foil was removed with installation of wooden windows and doors.
Foundation of evaluation platform modular unit
6 circular isolated footings were prepared for installation of modular unit. The building plot was equipped with underground electricity and LAN conduit.
Evaluation platform BIM model, June 2019
Documentation for evaluation platform was designed with BIM (building information modelling) tools. BIM allows us to identify exact possible collisions and to determine the appearance, equipment and installation in the early design phases.
